About this eBook

Preface Manufacturing of basic chemicals in India started in 1900 with the establishment of Bengal Chemical Works in Calcutta by Acharya P.C. Ray. Prior to independence there were 174 major chemical factories employing 25,176 workers, with an annual output of Rs. 14.6 crores. With the current share of Chemical Industry in the National Gross Industrial Output at about 40 , it is the fastest growing industry in the country. Over the past decades, there has been a considerable increase in the use of chemicals in there industries. However, industrial activities involving hazardous chemicals have the potential to cause occupational diseases, injuries and pollution to the environment, if effective chemical safety measures are not observed. The indiscriminate or negligent use and handling of chemicals in work activities may disseminate dust, fumes, gases, vapours and mist in the industrial environment. These can have a hazardous effect on the health of workers. Many chemicals are associated with risk and occupational diseases. The need for proper assessment of the risks posed by hazardous chemical and continuous care during their manufacturing, processing, treatment, packaging, storage, transportation, use and sale are being more acutely felt now then ever before. There is a growing need to create an effective control system in the processes involved in chemical industries. The Universities, in their revised syllabus of M.Sc. Environmental Sciences, have included the paper on Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health and Safety . Some Universities have even started a post graduate course on Industrial Hygiene . The industries have also made it mandatory for their safety officers to obtain post graduate diploma in Industrial Safety. The Present Book covers the topics related to Industrial Hygiene and Chemical Safety. This book would also be useful for industrial management personnel for ensuring occupational health and safety in industries involving chemically hazardous processes. This book provides comprehensive information to the students of Environmental Sciences Industrial Hygiene and Industrial Safely courses.
