PREFACE The w orld scenario has been changing from plentiful to lim ited resource applications extensive to intensive farm ing practices and indiscrim inate use of chem icals to judicial applications. Increasing dem ands for non-seasonal fruits vegetables and other agricultural products need a controlled environm ent w here it is possible to grow them irrespective of the am bient seasonal conditions. The greenhouse technology sa tisfacto rily answ ers the m ost of above-m entioned circum stances. Instead of being m erely a sustainable practice, greenhouse technolog y em pow ers agriculture as a profession giving more m arginal returns to the input. A w idely accepted reason fo r grow ing plants, in greenhouses rather than outside is its ability to control the environm ent. A greenhouse protects crops inside from extrem e tem peratures, high w inds, heavy rains, destructive storm s, and insects and diseases. The greenhouse cultivation as the current trend, extends the grow ing and crop production season, w hich m axim izes the equipm ent utilization, expands the export season span, increases the annual yield per unit area with e fficie n t use of inputs supplied, and thus eventually increases profitability. The greenhouse cultivation is an agro-system that presents im portant productive advantages in com parison with un-protected or ope n-a ir cultivation. Tropical conditions are favorable for vegetable production round the year if tem perature and irradiation conditions are considered, but the process is greatly hindered due to frequent occurrence of unsuitable w eather conditions. G reenhouse cultivation reduces these bottlenecks and thus helps providing higher yields and better fruit quality. V egetable cultivation in tropics is a source of fresh food, nutrients, and livelihood e sp e cially for rural population and thus is very im portant. M any researchers have m entioned benefits of greenhouse cultivation of vegetables in tropics as extension of harvesting tim e, reduced w ater consum ption, reduced susceptibility tow ards plant-diseases, higher yields, better quality, better use of fertilizer and o ther input resources, and higher returns. M oreover, adapted greenhouse constructions and fertigation system s with low er m anufacturing and m aintenance costs are getting im portant place in sustainable vegetable production. G reenhouse cultivation is being w idely adopted in m any developing countries of A sia and other parts of the w orld It has benefited thousands of farm ers by im proving their crop yields and profitability.
