PREFACE
Biotechnology is most exciting, challenging and promising field in the 21st century and considered to revolutionize the every walk of life. The tremendous impetus received for biotechnological research and education has been due to its direct impact on human and animal health, agricultural productivity and environmental issues. Due to increasing acceptance of genetically modified foods and agricultural produce, big pharmaceutical and agribusiness companies are investing huge funds in the biotechnology R D sector. It is felt that the second green-blue-white revolution can be achieved only through sustained improvement in the genetic upliftment of native crops and livestock. In the last thirty years, a revolution has taken place that has put molecular biology and biotechnology at the heart of all the biological sciences with extensive applications in agriculture, health, industry and environment. However, the major problems of developing biotechnology in the developing countries are lack of skilled, trained quality human resources and availability of resource materials for quality teaching. This textbook is an attempt to compile information about some of the biotechnological processes for their easy access at a single platform which at present, is lacking. The aim of this book is not only to bring together the various fields of biotechnology, but also to present the basic principle in a relatively understandable form behind each of the potential biotechnologies emerging in recent-past. Our main objective has been to present a complete view of biotechnology to students, especially those who have just ventured into this field and need a head start. In order to keep high academic standards and quality teaching, it is now mandatory to have basic and applied paradigms about the molecular biology and biotechnology amongst the graduate, postgraduate students and research scholars which will also enable them to understand the tools and techniques used for the exploration of living system. The book has been edited and compiled to include five sections having a total of 35 chapters covering diverse technologies with their basic principles and practices so that students can develop interest and appreciate the role of biotechnology for future research and advancement of agriculture, veterinary, biomedical, industrial development and environmental protection for the welfare of mankind in particular and society, in general. Information is provided in textbook style with good illustrations which makes this book a more suitable reading material for the beginners in the area. At the same time, we also provide the updated references for further

clarification and detailed information about specific topics. The flow in each chapter is uniform and logical to help the students in providing sufficient background knowledge for each technology. Each chapter begin with a set of clearly defined objectives of the technology followed by its concept with historical perspectives, details of the experimental methods, medical, veterinary, agricultural and industrial applications and finally concluding with future prospective of the technology. Many technological concepts have been made clearer with suitable illustrations and the latest information using models to help the students visualize and interpret difficult concepts. For those students who wish to pursue particular topics, a reference section at the back of the text provides chapter-by-chapter listing of review articles and articles in the original literature. The present book has been designed with an intention of covering all the potential technologies and their applications in both medicine as well as agriculture. It describes the processes and methods used to manipulate living organisms or the substances and products from these organisms for medical, agricultural, and industrial purposes. It is hoped that this textbook will serve a sort of essential reading for all the students of biotechnology, biochemistry, biosciences and applied microbiology, and for researchers in biotechnology industries.
