About this eBook

PREFACE Biotechnology is a proven effective tool to make further advancements in agriculture. There is a parallel growth in the field of biotechnology as compared with information technology. More fruitful advancements made in this field have stimulated newer and newer areas of research especially in agriculture. Even a layman shows more interest in understanding what is what in biotechnology, there is no need to say about the interest for this subject among the science students especially at college level. Since biotechnology is an integrated science including many aspects of biology, the basic principles of this subject have to be clearly understood by the students. This book deals comprehensively with most of the major aspects of agricultural biotechnology mainly addressing to the needs of graduate level students. This book has been divided into six major parts viz., plant tissue culture techniques, molecular biology, recombinant DNA techniques, environmental bio technology, industrial bio technology and immunology. We have taken sufficient care to simplify the contents of each chapter with appropriate illustrations and figures. Exercises are given at the end of each chapter. Protocols are given for some of the laboratory exercises which are essential at under graduate level. Various aspects of plant tissue culture including history, laboratory organization, nutrition media, micropropagation, cell suspension culture, anther culture, embryo culture, protoplast culture, cybrid production and cryopreservation have been well elaborated. To make the recombinant DNA techniques easily understandable, basics of molecular biology has been explained with self explanatory illustrations. A broad outline on molecular markers has been included to understand the application of biotechnology in plant breeding and forensic sciences. Application of biotechnology for industrial purpose has been dealt separately. A detailed glossary would help the students to get familiarized with the technical terms, related to agricultural biotechnology. We hope that the contents of this book would fulfil the requirements of syllabus of the fundamental courses on Agricultural Biotechnology for undergraduate degree courses of Agricultural Universities.
