Advances in Farming Systems
Advances in Farming Systems
About this eBook
PREFACE Agriculture is recognized as the greatest living industry in our country. It is the core of Indian economy. Agriculture is practiced mainly by the small and marginal farmers, who constitute 80 of total farming community. These small and marginal farmers were by-passed from the process of development during the green revolution. It is difficult to visualize a prosperous India without the development of these farmers. Due to shrinking land holding, small farms are going to be dominated in future. The development of small farms in rainfed environments is a priority for future India. Faced with the situation, one need to look at agricultural strategies that maximize productivity and generate adequate income and employment for the small and marginal farmers. The economic limitations of small sized land operations are the main challenge of the 21s century for t su stain ed in crea se in p rodu ction . This calls for a stru ctu ra l and organizational changes in managing the farm sector in India. The important issue is how to develop institutional mechanisms so that farmers get higher incomes by realizing the advantages of beneficial technologies, aggregation of inputs and outputs, value addition and marketing. For the small and marginal farmers, their farm is their industry and profitability of these farms industries depends upon right kind of decisions with respect to enterprise crop selection among alternatives, levels of each enterprise depending upon farm family requirement, market opportunities, and farm constraints and risk involvement. This commands for a scientific approach to decision making in farm industry management, thus developing entrepreneurship. Hence, development of models based on mathematical equations and calculations using optimization and multi-criteria decision making techniques MCDM will provide a scientific basis for decision making in farm operations management of small and marginal holdings which are lacking at present. Keeping the post green revolution challenges of agriculture in our country, Govt, of India puts major focus on integrated farming system and crop diversification as the m ajor tool program m e to bring 2n green d revolution. Development of sustainable integrated farming system by the small and marginal farmers, who constitute more than 80 of the farming community, is considered as the major pathway to develop sustainable agriculture.
With this background the book is designed giving focus on main 8 broad areas i Farming systems - concept, principles, importance and issues ii Farming systems - procedures and methodologies iii Multiple criteria - a decision making technique in managing farming systems iv Optimization tools and methodologies v Integrated farming systems vi Management of cropping systems and component technology for efficient resou rce use v ii C on serva tion farm in g system s and v iii Entrepreneurship, post harvest technology and value addition. The objective of the book is to provide information on the advanced methodologies of FSR which will improve the knowledge of readers in the area of FSR and optim ization methodologies to design the integrated farming systems on a scientific basis. The book may contribute in this regard.
