Preface Biotechnology originated as an application area to leverage biological sciences with technology development potential. Bioinformatics originated as a valuable tool where computation of biological data and its analysis facilitated several discoveries. Today, both biotechnology and bioinformatics have emerged as advanced areas contributing to several sub-disciplines of science for the betterment of society. Biotechnology has contributed to environment protection, health, agriculture and other allied areas. Several bioprocesses developed have given products that have been commercialized and have improved health, energy, environment and industrial sector. Biological synthesis and transformations are preferred over chemical processes. Bioenergy is now an upcoming sector where extremophiles are being exploited for the production of biofuels. Enzymatic processes are being used for the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to fermentable substrate for the production of biofuels. Enzymes are used for the synthesis of industrially important metabolites and medicinal compounds. Extraction of value added compounds from wastes are economically viable bioprocesses being transformed into technologies. Biodegradation of hazardous wastes, explosives and recalcitrant compounds is one of the most sought after ways to protect the environment from anthropogenic activities. Biomaterials like biopolymers have started replacing hazardous polymers like plastics for a cleaner and safer environment. Bioinformatics aids in discovery of drugs and novel compounds against multidrug resistant pathogens and diseases. Nanotechnology has provided some successful anticancer compounds and drug delivery systems which give us immense hope for the cure of challenging diseases and infections. This book is a collection of chapters relating the applications of biotechnology in different sectors. The chapters represent the research work of subject experts who participated in International Conference on Advances in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics 2013 ICABB 2013 and X Convention of Biotech Research Society, India BRSI held at Pune, India during November 25 to 27, 2013. The aim of this book is to keep the readers abreast with advances in the field of Biotechnology. There are thirteen chapters dealing with latest research developments demonstrated with relevant text, figures, tables and illustrations. The editors thank all the authors for their valuable contributions. We appreciate the efforts of publishers and authors whose works are cited in various chapters.
